Books

[dabrera1980] Bernard D'Abrera. Butterflies of the Afrotropical Region. Lansdowne Editions, 1980. ISBN 0-7018-1029-7.

I used this book as the first reference to identify the butterflies photographed in Cameroon and Congo. This book is very complete and was an invaluable help. Nevertheless, I tried, when possible, to doublecheck with other sources the identifications and the names.

[dabrera1982] Bernard D'Abrera. Butterflies of the Oriental Region - Part I. Hill House, 1982. ISBN 0-9593639-0-4.

I used this book as the first reference to identify the butterflies photographed in China.

[dabrera1985] Bernard D'Abrera. Butterflies of the Oriental Region - Part II. Hill House, 1985. ISBN 0-9593639-1-2.

I used this book as the first reference to identify the butterflies photographed in China.

[dabrera1986] Bernard D'Abrera. Sphingidae Mundi: Hawk Moths of the World. E. W. Classey, 1986. ISBN 0-86096-022-6.
[dabrera2001] Bernard D'Abrera. The concise atlas of Butterflies of the World. Hill House, 2001. ISBN 0 947 352 37 6.

This magnificent book illustrates, for each of the 5 world regions defined by its author, almost all the known genus of Papilionoidea. Therefore, this is an axcellent tool to have (at least) a first idea when trying to identify exotic butterflies. D'Abrera takes the opportunity of this more widespread book to unleash a virulent attack against the evolutionist religon...

[tolmanle1999] Tom Tolman and Richard Lewington. Guide des papillons d'Europe et d'Afrique du nord. delachaux et niestlé, 1999. ISBN 2-603-01141-3.

Simply my reference for european butterflies. This is the translation, by lepidopterist Patrice Leraut, of the English book Collins Field Guide to Butterflies of Britain and Europe.

[handfield1999] Louis Handfield. Le guide des papillons du Québec, volume 1. Broquet, 1999. ISBN 2-89000-486-4.

The inventory of all the butterflies and moths living in Québec, that is, more than 1450 species, all illustrated with photographs, and coming with geographic distributions data and flying periods. A very very impressing work.

[william2003] Mark C. William. Butterflies and Skippers of the Afrotropical Region (Papilionoidae and Hesperioidae): an Encyclopedia. http://www.ucl.ac.uk/taxome/lit/bsa/, 2003.

As stated by its title, this encyclopedia tries to exhaustively list the butterlies and skippers of the afrotropical region, with up-to-date data. I use this very well documented documents (distributions of species, data on early stages, knowns synonyms, etc.) to determine the actual names of the species I am interested with. It looks like this document cannot anymore be downloaded. It seems that it was available for several months only because of a configuration mistake on the web server which hosted it...
